Reading Response Sheet: 3 Questions to Ask After Reading
You do not need a quiz for every book. Three good questions tell you if your child really understood the story: the problem, a character, and one "what if." This sheet works with any chapter book or read-aloud, and it comes with cut-apart book talk cards.
What your child practices
✓Retelling the problem and solution
✓Describing a character with evidence
✓Cause and effect ("what if…")
✓Talking about books out loud
How to use it
- Ask the questions out loud first; writing comes second.
- Push for "because" answers: "Why do you think that?"
- Keep the cards in the car or at the dinner table for quick book talks.

Which books does this work with?
Any story: picture books, chapter books, even movies. The parent guide shows a sample with a classic fable.
My child hates writing. Now what?
Let them answer out loud and you write. The thinking is the important part.
