The -at Family Chat

About This Activity

The -at Family Chat helps early readers practice words from the -at word family, like cat, hat, mat and sat. Focusing on one word family at a time helps children read lots of new words quickly by changing just the first sound.

It’s a gentle, interactive way to build phonics confidence for kindergarten and first grade readers.

How to Use It at Home

  • Stretch out each word slowly, then say it fast: “c-a-t, cat.”
  • Write -at on paper and let your child add different first letters to make new words.
  • Draw a quick picture for each -at word your child reads.

Continue with the rhyming games and flash cards for the -og and -ug families.
