Using Context Clues 4th Grade Passage

About This Activity

This fourth grade reading passage helps students practice using context clues to figure out unfamiliar words. Instead of stopping at a hard word, readers learn to look at the sentences around it for hints about its meaning.

Context clues are a key reading skill in upper elementary grades and help students tackle more challenging books on their own.

How to Use It at Home

  • Have your student underline the clue words that helped them guess a meaning.
  • Check their guess against a dictionary afterward and talk about how close it was.
  • Look for context clues together in a book they’re already reading.
